Summary

I, Dr. Bivek Singh, have dedicated my career to academic excellence and service in the medical field. As a finalist for the "Engaged Academic of the Year" award, my journey is marked by significant contributions to medical education, research, and community service. I founded the Nepalese Doctors Lounge (NEDOL), the largest virtual forum for Nepalese doctors, which garnered 11,200 members in just 2.5 years. Since my second year of medical school in 2010, I have taught thousands of medical and paramedic students from various Asian countries. I completed my Clinical Research Training at Harvard Medical School in 2020. My dedication extends beyond academia; I have been a frontline volunteer during major crises, such as the swine flu epidemics in Western Nepal and the 2015 earthquake. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I led a team of over 40 doctors providing round-the-clock free consultations. My impact on education is profound, having authored influential medical books and served as a mentor to countless students. My accolades include being named Asia's Outstanding Young Educator of the Year in the Philippines in 2024, and receiving the Outstanding Contribution in Education award at the Asian Education Conclave in November 2024. Post-COVID, to honor my father's five decades of healthcare service, I started a medical laboratory in Eastern Nepal, providing free diabetic screening for all patients. I have contributed nine research articles to reputed international journals, attended six national interviews, and been featured in more than a dozen newspaper articles. My areas of interest include neurology, medical education, public health, and healthcare systems in developing nations. This unique blend of scholarly achievement, innovative research, and compassionate service underscores my suitability for this esteemed award.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

My impact on lives is profound and far-reaching. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I established a health clinic in Eastern Nepal, providing affordable healthcare services and free diabetic screening to the local population. My leadership in founding the Nepalese Doctors Lounge (NEDOL) created a vital support network for over 11,200 doctors, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing during the crisis.
I have traveled to various regions of Western Nepal to impart my knowledge, especially to students from remote areas who cannot afford education. My students now hold various positions in health centers across Nepal and Asia. I worked as an academic coordinator for MBBS students immediately after completing my degree. I have led a social not-for-profit organization as the founding Vice President, serving the nation.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

My journey in academia and healthcare has been marked by continuous learning and leadership. One key learning is the importance of adaptability and resilience. The unexpected challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic required innovative solutions, such as the creation of virtual platforms like NEDOL to support healthcare professionals globally.
I advise aspiring academics and healthcare leaders to embrace a multidisciplinary approach, combining clinical practice with research and community service. I emphasize the significance of mentorship and collaboration, encouraging young professionals to seek guidance and work collectively to overcome obstacles. My experience underscores the value of perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

Looking ahead, I plan to further my contributions to medical education and research. I aim to pursue a PhD/DPhil, focusing on public health/medicine, while continuing my clinical practice. I am also preparing for the largest international medical conference in Nepal, slated for early 2025, which will foster global collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Additionally, I intend to expand NEDOL’s reach, offering more training sessions and resources for healthcare professionals in remote areas. My plans include establishing more clinics in underserved regions, ensuring access to quality healthcare for all. I remain committed to bridging gaps in medical education and healthcare delivery, driven by my passion for service and innovation.
