IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

MSU truly lives to its philosophy of Private but not for profit and its tagline “Transforming Lives, Enriching Future”. MSU envisions becoming a leading transformative global university, engaging society through entrepreneurship, research, innovation, industry integration, and holistic education. Central to this vision is the commitment to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN17SDG) and ensuring education accessibility for all, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or economic background.

MSU Core University Priorities focus on students, academics, industry, entrepreneurship, internationalization, research, learning experience, technology, sustainability, branding, and talent management. MSU's value-driven approach integrates environmental and societal responsibilities through flagship programs, infrastructure development, applied research, community engagement, and partnerships with industries and authorities.

Collaborating with 300 partner universities and 2000 local industry partners, MSU contributes to society by providing scholarships, conducting 196 SDG initiatives, research grants, public-private partnerships, and producing balanced, holistic and well-rounded graduates. At the peak of COVID19 economic disruption, MSU financially supported 4257 students worth RM33 million, and this year committed RM50 million to further increase its support towards accessibility to education for all.

While most public universities hospitals have Private Wing to generate additional revenue through full-paying patients, MSU Medical Centre does the reverse in being the only university-owned private specialist medical centre that has a Public Wing through which under-privileged community receives free medical treatment sponsored by MSU Foundation (Yayasan MSU). These commitments towards society makes MSU a unique university that truly believes in transforming lives and enriching future to all the stakeholders it engages with.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

As an Engaged University, MSU interacts with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including authorities, parents, students, communities, academic and industry partners, and the government. Each stakeholder has unique needs and concerns, often placing challenging demands on university resources. A key factor for success is understanding and addressing these needs through continuous engagement within the university's ecosystem. This requires agility to meet the demands and adapt to the evolving landscape of higher education in Malaysia.

MSU aims to transform lives and produce balanced, holistic, and well-rounded graduates. Guided by the philosophy of being a private, non-profit university, MSU views sustainability holistically, beyond financial and profitability aspects. The three core domains of MSU’s sustainability are Financial, Environmental, and Values.

MSU ensures education is accessible to all by maintaining reasonable and affordable costs. With significant financial support through scholarships, MSU's ecosystems must work symbiotically and operate seamlessly to ensure cost-effectiveness and efficiency for financial sustainability. While allowing some degree of autonomy, each part of the ecosystem must align with the university's goals, requiring the highest commitment and teamwork from leadership and all team members.

As a value-driven university, MSU is committed to supporting all 17 UN SDGs. Activities curated within each SDG focus on MSU’s 2G culture of Giving and Gratefulness. Embedding this culture enhances leadership, communication, teamwork, and empathy for the environment and society, which are essential for developing balanced, holistic, and well-rounded graduates. This holistic approach aims to humanize graduates in a world increasingly driven toward robotic mindsets, behaviors, and cultures.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

MSU’s future commitment to sustainability and community engagement is central to its vision of becoming a leading transformative global university. This vision emphasizes engaging society through entrepreneurship, research, innovation, industry integration, and holistic education. Core to this transformative vision is the leadership's dedication to implementing the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN17SDG) and ensuring education accessibility for all, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or economic background.

MSU aims to implement low-carbon initiatives and practice energy efficiency and conservation throughout its campus, adhering to relevant acts and regulations to create a sustainable environment for teaching, learning, research, and holistic intellectual development. MSU targets a 40 to 45 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

MSU will further enhance its research on food security through vertical farming in partnership with industry players. This initiative aims to develop large-scale vertical farming systems in urban areas using advanced technology to address Malaysia's food safety and security issues. This long-term collaboration seeks to explore food production options that minimize land and pesticide use, thereby reducing environmental and health impact to society.

In the life sciences and medical fields, MSU is embarking on research and development in regenerative alternative medicine. Additionally, in response to the growing influence of artificial intelligence, MSU is enhancing its research and applications in AI, big data, and cybersecurity to benefit society.

Through these initiatives, MSU demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainability, innovation, and community engagement, striving to create a better future for all.
