Summary

Dessy's entrepreneurial approach is truly unique, fueled by her desire to 'build something.' This distinctive mindset has been a driving force in her design, education, and entrepreneurship work. Her formal training in engineering, coupled with over 20 years of involvement in social causes nationally and internationally, including seven years in aviation safety, has equipped her with a profound understanding of people, technology, and society. Through SociopreneurID, Dessy aims to develop a responsible ecosystem to unleash stakeholders' potential at any level of society to work collaboratively to create a better future for all. Dessy designed targeted programs to encourage society, particularly youth, to become responsible agents to prepare future society through promoting social innovation and entrepreneurship education. Dessy says, "The responsible ecosystem cannot be created without creating empathy first. Empathy will change one's perception to tackle various problems around him, it encourages him to involve and be a part of solution. We believe if he practices it regularly, he will create positive impacts on others. Thus, if a pool of like-minded people who share the same thoughts and take actions collectively, they will change the world." Her leadership led her to the prestigious Meaningful Business 100 Leader (MB100) award in 2019 for her contribution to SDG 4, Quality Education, while in the same year, she received the Global Youth Icon Award from India for her contribution to engaging youth to be a change. The amplification of her works has created a ripple effect in which, in 2023, the Learning Planet Institute recognized Dessy as one of the 11 ecosystem leaders in the Global South. The same year, she was honored with the Sustainable Champion GRIT Award and was featured in the 30 under sustainability list in Indonesia by ANGIN. In 2021, Dessy brought the entrepreneurial university and engaged university concept to design a system architecture to support the new policy issued by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia. The term Responsible Ecosystem inspired the design that she coined through Sociopreneur Indonesia. The design engaged stakeholders to play a pivotal role in higher education. It directly contributed to the national development agenda. It helped solve issues in the surrounding area, such as extreme poverty, stunting, illiteracy, etc. Ever since, higher education institutions have applied the model to support the implementation of the new policy and simultaneously make a real contribution to the national development agenda. Until the end of 2023, the contribution of this model to local/national agenda priorities reached 23.73%. Her leadership approach is to create space for everyone to grow and shine. She engages others to be involved and a part of the journey so they can make their tribe and amplify the changes. Through Sociopreneur Indonesia, Dessy aims to establish a Responsible Ecosystem by applying entrepreneurship education and social innovation. Her dedication made her appointed by UNESCO to establish the National Chapter of UNESCO EE-Net in Indonesia, and she also chose to lead the Catalyst 2030 ASEAN for empowering Southeast Asian nations to enact policy changes and systemic reforms that foster social entrepreneurship, sustainable development and equitable growth for all. She recently gathered policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs, and communities globally to work together to improve the current education system by promoting entrepreneurship education and social innovation through a new flagship program of Sociopreneur Indonesia, the Global Entrepreneurship Meeting. By establishing a global community, the Responsible Ecosystem is getting closer.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Since 2013, Dessy has created entrepreneurship education and social innovation programs, focusing on establishing an ecosystem. All the programs engaged multi-stakeholders to improve the education system.

Program Impacts:

1. Entrepreneurship Education for children and youth has engaged more than 40,000 learners and more than 800 schools in Indonesia, Malaysia, and India through various entrepreneurship programs that aim to introduce and develop the entrepreneurial skills of children and youth to prepare them as future leaders.

2. Social Innovation programs, particularly for youth, have created 2.143 ideas/innovations/initiatives that focused on improving existing conditions such as municipal waste issues, environmental issues, SME development, et. The programs delivered through schools and universities encourage real contributions to society and the Planet.

3. Empathy Project. Since its first launch in 2018, the Empathy Project has introduced entrepreneurship education to more than 5,000 children and teenagers with the support of 500 university youth volunteers. It has also helped the development of SMEs in four provinces in Indonesia by involving 134 young innovators who worked directly with the SMEs. The Empathy Project has developed 16 micro-libraries to improve reading literacy in rural areas.
During the pandemic 2021, the Empathy Project was redesigned to become Virtual. This program helped more than 300 schools in Indonesia have study materials as their education was affected by the pandemic. It was manifested in the Virtual Empathy Project, which engaged 798 youth volunteers and professionals to create 137 educational videos for learning at primary and secondary schools. This program has become a regular requirement in some universities to encourage students to contribute to society.

4. Festival of Social Creativity. Dessy designed this program in 2015 to introduce entrepreneurship education to children with the help of youth volunteers. At first, this program encouraged university students to be aware of their surroundings and take action to be a part of the solution. Later, the program was extended to be a platform for learning for children and youth by working together to achieve a mission, such as saving the Earth, helping children in rural areas, etc. Since 2015, this program has engaged 6000 children with 1500 university youth volunteers.

5. Involve and lead the establishment of MBKM Mandiri (Emancipated Learning) by establishing a system architecture to support the implementation of a new education policy in Indonesia. Since 2022, interventions have been created to improve the capabilities of higher education institutions in Indonesia. They have successfully engaged more than 900 universities to develop their programs, and this strategy has opened opportunities for more than 1 Million students to join the program.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

1. Dare to Dream and make it your vision. A great leader must possess a dream and transform that dream into a compelling vision. A dream is the starting point, and a leader needs to articulate the dream and communicate it with passion, engaging and inspiring others to see its potential. A vision provides a roadmap for the future and gives people a sense of purpose, direction, and belonging. By effectively communicating the vision and aligning the team behind it, a leader can motivate and empower people to work towards making the dream a reality.

2. Have the courage to take action. A leader must have the courage to take action because it often involves making difficult decisions and taking calculated risks. Courage gives leaders the confidence to stand by their convictions and move forward, even amid uncertainty or opposition. It also sets an example for others, showing that embracing change and overcoming obstacles is possible. In essence, courage is essential for a leader to drive progress, navigate challenges, and ultimately lead by example.

3. Enjoy the process. Leaders' ability to enjoy the process will improve the team. When a leader visibly savors the journey towards a goal, it acts as a catalyst, motivating and energizing the team. This enjoyment also serves as a beacon of resilience and positivity through challenges, inspiring and reassuring the team. The team draws strength from the leader's enjoyment, feeling inspired and comforted in the face of difficulties; thus, it will foster a more inclusive and positive work environment where everyone feels engaged and motivated.

4. Never stop learning.A learning-focused leader sets a positive example for their team members by demonstrating a commitment to personal growth and skill development. Their willingness to seek new knowledge and embrace changing trends and technologies inspires team members to do the same. A leader must be a lifelong learner, as there are many things to explore.

5. Empathy. Empathy helps the leader. A leader needs empathy to understand and develop a deeper connection with the team. Empathy will foster trust, open communication, and team engagement, while it is also essential for navigating challenges and fostering innovation

6. Collaborate; you cannot dance alone. A leader relies on followers, a strong team, supportive colleagues, and dedicated partners to achieve success.

7. Be grateful. A leader should express gratitude to foster a positive work environment and increase team members' motivation, productivity, and satisfaction. Grateful leaders are more likely to be respected and admired, leading to stronger relationships, improved morale, and better team performance.
